Language forum - Online language platform
“The more languages you know, the more human you are” (Emperor Charles V)
Definition and learning objective
The language forum offers all kinds of possibilities for language practice. This has been developed by the Centre for Applied Linguistics at Hasselt University (BE), www.uhasselt.be/ctl.
Language is a unique means of communication, which does not merely consist of words and sentences. That is why the language forum offers much more. Attention is paid to communicative culture, typical gestures, attitudes, symbols, customs, historical and folk figures, monuments and landscapes, economic and other activities.
Target group
The forum is aimed at every language learner, from toddlers to elderly people, as well as language teachers or language coaches from every type of education, whether formal or informal.
Concretely
The hub of the EMR language forum offers
- For each of the three target languages, German, French and Dutch,
- More than thousand original, often multimedial exercises.
- In addition, there are hundreds of “cultural” exercises at A1 and A2 CEFR level.
- For starters as well as fluent language users.
- All exercises will be provided in written form and, whenever possible and meaningful, also in oral form, or both.
How to use it
The language forum is fairly accessible. A coding allows for tailored selections, with personalized feedback and a clickthrough to similar exercises with an original didactic dictionary. One can practice with access to all available supporting tools. One has the possibility to test one’s knowledge without feedback: a final score returns the verdict. You may break the record against a time limit. You may enter the competition with your competitors. In both cases you can follow your ranking online. Through selection along learning pathways one can focus on clear-cut grammar topics or communication in specific situations.
